Generally there are three different types of Percolation Areas that are found in Co Donegal.

These are

  1. The Trench system. This is the most common and simplest system which consists of excavated trenches that contain a network of wastewater pipes and stone. The area needed for this would be around 200sq metres for a typical 4-bedroom dwelling.
  2. Soil Polishing Filter. This is a network of perforated wastewater pipes placed on top of a mound of soil, the wastewater is pumped to the pipes which percolates down through the soil and cleans the partially treated effluent. This system can be below or above ground depending on your site. A Soil Polishing Filter typically requires an area of around 90 sq metres.
  3. Sand Polishing Filter. This filter consists of a number of layers of sand and stone placed on top of one another, the effluent is pumped into the top of the filter and percolates down through the layers thus cleaning it, a sand polishing filter typically requires 20sq metres, this type of filter is suitable for small sites or steep/sloping sites.

No matter the size of your site, there will be a solution for you!
